Kansas Cart Laws

Golf Carts vs LSVs in Kansas: Know Your Ride

Dear Outlaw Golf Cart Rebels,

Before you hit the streets, you need to know the difference between a standard golf cart and an LSV (Low Speed Vehicle). Yes, they might look similar, but the law sees them differently – and knowing it could save you some headaches.

Golf Carts vs LSVs

Your standard golf cart is built for freedom but with some limits. We're talking:

  • Max speed of 20 MPH (keep it cool)

  • Weight limit of 1,800 pounds (no overloading)

  • Maximum crew of 4 riders (choose your crew wisely)

Now, LSVs? A little different:

  • Can handle up to 3,000 pounds of weight (that's some serious muscle)

  • Cruising speed of 25 MPH (little more kick in the engine)

Golf Cart Freedom Rules

Here's the sweet part – you don't need a license to drive a golf cart in Kansas! But before you get too excited, there are some rules of the game:

  • Keep it under 20 MPH (speed demon dreams will have to wait)

  • No night riding on most streets (even with lights – sorry, night owls)

  • Still responsible for any crashes or DUIs (don't be that person)

LSV Street Laws

LSVs are basically treated like cars, which means:

  • Need a valid driver's license (time to make it official)

  • Must be street legal with all the fixings:

    • Headlamps

    • Turn signals

    • Rearview mirror

    • The whole nine yards

But here's the payoff – you can ride these on any street with a speed limit of 30 MPH or less. Just stay off those 45+ MPH highways.

Getting Your LSV Street Legal

Want to register your LSV? Here's what the DMV wants:

  • Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin, or

  • Title and VIN number

  • Proper registration

  • Insurance

Bought your ride outside Kansas? Might take a bit more paperwork, but some basic information can speed up the process.
